XCO Group is a leading manufacturer and supplier of all types of branded corporate goods, promotional items, and corporate gift solutions in South Africa and we suggest that you consider using banners to reinforce your corporate identity. Banners have an impressive historical legacy and we look at some of their benefits.

Drawing Attention

Banners seem to be everywhere: At sports events, expos, product launches, banks, retail outlets, permanent or pop-up restaurants and on pavements and the sides of bridges. They can be strategically placed outdoors too. Once you focus on these marketing, advertising, and promotional aids, you’ll be astonished at how extensively this marketing medium is used. It’s comparatively inexpensive but offers an effective way of drawing attention to a brand.

Easily Assemble

Lightweight, easily assembled, and portable, banners and flags are prominently featured in XCO Group’s online branding catalogue. Flags are usually rectangular, square, triangular, or tapered, whilst the former products are available in a wide variety of configurations, including:

·         A-frames

·         X-frames

·         Pop-ups

·         Banner walls

·         Sharkfins

·         Flying banners

·         Pull-ups

·         Sports exposure (post protectors)

·         Cubes

·         Tent shapes

·         Eyelets

·         Kiosks

·         Lightboxes (indoor use)

·         Fence wraps

·         Buntings

·         Inflatables

This multitude of options is a far cry from the early history of these products. As may be expected, one must return to the era of the Roman Empire for historical information.

Ancient Roman Standards

Ancient Roman banners, known as “standards”, were exceptionally important military insignia, so much so that the fall of the battle standard, (as a result of the bearer being felled), was akin to a military crisis. A new standard-bearer would quickly take up the fallen standard and hold it aloft again, lest the company or entire army lose the battle. The capture of the standard by the enemy was infinitely worse. This was seen as a bad omen and a loss of Roman prestige. Banner capture left the company devoid of this indicator of the soldiers’ rallying point and visible means of conveying battle tactics, as well as being insulting to the honourable Roman Empire. Legions, cohorts, or entire armies might enter into battle or a full-scale war to retrieve a captured standard, which carried the insignia of each division, plus the Roman Empire’s primary emblem, the eagle.
