Getting a Good Look at Golf Shirts

Even in these difficult and often trying times during the current pandemic, the great game of golf continues, albeit now usually without the enthusiastic spectators who add a huge amount of atmosphere and good vibes to major tournaments.

Wednesdays and Weekends

Particularly on Wednesdays and weekends, keen golfers can’t wait to don their distinctive golf shirts, shorts or comfy chinos or slacks, peaked cap or visor, and studded golf shoes.

Adding an Extra Layer

For a typical golfer, it remains paramount to prevent the upper body and muscles from becoming stiff, whilst the torso and arms should be left flexible and free for that important powerful swing out on the course.

As a result, pullovers made of stretchy fabrics with “give”, are ideal to add an extra layer of warmth, worn over one’s sports top when out in the open when it’s chilly.

Characteristics of a Quality Golf Shirt

A quality, well-designed golf shirt, made of a soft, moisture-absorbing and breathable stretchy fabric, allows golfers a free, unfettered and unrestricted range of movements, keeping bodies comfortable throughout all the twists and turns required to align the body properly, while hitting a decent shot or stroke.

Providing it’s a top quality shirt, the garment should launder easily, retaining its form and shape during and after the wash, so that it remains neat and virtually as good as new for a long time, wash after wash, always ready for another appropriately-attired round of golf.

Buyers be Aware

These garments are often visibly branded with a corporate or team logo, the individual player’s sponsor’s insignia, and equally notably - in the case of famous, big brand manufacturers of this item of clothing, the self-same manufacturer’s brand, two of the most recognisable being the Lacoste alligator/crocodile, and the Polo pony.

Both these big brands are exclusive, expensive and sought-after, sometimes as status symbols, suggesting that the wearer is wealthy and able to afford famous brand leisurewear. Prompted by greed and the prospect of “easy” money, the sportswear market is sullied by counterfeit copies of original manufacturers’ goods, with fake logos affixed onto inferior shirts and other apparel.

Nefarious traders attempt to sell these fake goods to trusting customers at high, inflated prices, claiming that articles are genuine branded products. Buyers should beware and be aware.

Lacoste

The genuine Lacoste crocodile appears on the left-hand side of the golf shirt, and it should be in line with the second button on the placket of the neck opening. The croc and its rounded tail face left; the upper jaw and tail are angled slightly upwards. Teeth, claws and body parts are clearly defined on a narrow, neat white background, which enhances the logo’s detail. Since the genuine logo is stitched on from the inside, no stitching should appear on the front of the garment.

Polo

Many consumers are unaware that there are two Polo brands on the market, one belonging to Ralph Lauren (Ralph Lauren Polo) and the other to LA Group (South African Polo). Both companies own legally registered brands with the same name – Polo, and similar logos, consisting of a polo player, mounted on his polo pony and holding his polo mallet aloft.

Although the high-end Ralph Lauren brand is famous, expensive and sought-after internationally, the South African version is not counterfeit or illegal. Discerning brand buyers should ascertain which Polo golf shirt they’re acquiring, to ensure that they’re not misled, brand and price-wise.

Although there are various detailed methods of spotting differences and fakes, the most obvious difference between these two registered brands is brought to golf shirt customers via the brands’ respective ponies. Both Polo ponies appear on the left chest area of the shirt; Ralph Lauren’s steed gallops towards the buttons on the placket; the South African pony is heading away from the centre of the golf shirt and its buttons.
