Attributes of Gentlemen, Attired in Great Golf Shirts

Golf is a great game, drawing thousands of spectators to all the great courses and great tournaments annually, plus millions of television viewers, who all wish they could be there, to witness the great, sometimes legendary players compete for the big prizes and honours that accompany the prize money.

Couch-Bound Fans

Sadly, for many an aficionado, he or she is relegated to watching tournaments unfold from the comfort of their couches. The closest they get to the game is by donning a colourful golf shirt and a peaked cap, before they settle in and issue clear instructions to the rest of the family that they’re not to be disturbed until the screening of the match has concluded.

On occasion, an oopsie may occur, resulting in the spellbound, couch-bound avid fan being guilty of ungentlemanly conduct, because of an interruption - even more so if interruption is likely to be lengthy, because it’s due to a current South African phenomenon – load shedding.

Gentleman’s Game

Load shedding apart, this wonderful sport - golfalong with cricket, is known as a gentleman’s game, which automatically implies that all golfers are male, and by extension, all must be gentlemen. Not entirely so, since the ladies’ game is prominent too, and its popularity and prize monies also continue to grow.

Nevertheless, we’re focussing on the “gentlemen’s” aspect of the great game for the moment, since in this context, the term is applicable to all players. So, irrespective of culture, background, education, social status, training, and so-called class, what constitutes a gentleman and what makes golfers gentlemen?

Gentlemen in General

Contrary to common perception, being a gentleman has very little, if anything, to do with being gentle – soft, kind, moderate, tender, non-violent, calm, mild and non-aggressive – as opposed to harsh, strict, stringent, forceful, heavy-handed or strong.

In the English traditional class system, a gentleman was born of a good family, but not of nobility. His social position was that of the lowest rank of landed gentry. Financially, he was of independent means, not needing to work to earn a living or to maintain his genteel lifestyle.

Nowadays, a true gentleman is a man who is honourable, behaves in a certain way, and he exhibits certain traits – good manners, courtesy and politeness. He shows respect to others and always conducts himself faultlessly. He dresses impeccably, in accordance with the occasion, and he observes the rules of etiquette.

Golf’s Gentlemen and Ladies

This brings us to today’s players of this illustrious gentlemen’s game, and of course, the customs, rules and regulations, golfers’ etiquette and their attire, notably their golf shirts.

·         No player is permitted onto a course unless he or she is appropriately attired – first and foremost wearing a golf shirt, which may be long- or short-sleeved, or in the case of ladies, sleeveless. However, the shirt must have a collar above a buttoned/unbuttoned placket

·         Outdoors, most players wear a peaked cap or a visor to protect their faces from harmful UV rays

·         Loose-fitting shorts or slacks are worn by both genders. Many gents prefer chinos

·         Shoes feature studs, which secure the feet in position, especially when playing a powerful tee or long range shot. These studded shoes must never be worn inside the clubhouse areas, where floor surfaces don’t feature special rubberised protective covering

·         A true gentleman (lady) will never, but never commit a lie on their scorecard. Guilty parties are likely to be ostracised or avoided by fellow players
