Commonplace Concepts

For many people, two types of garments come to mind immediately when the subject of corporate clothing crops up in conversation. It may be the smart, tailored, or smart-casual wear that significant business entities issue to their staff members to wear when on duty in the workplace or elsewhere, whenever they represent their employer’s organisation.

Uniforms

Alternatively, one’s thoughts may turn to uniforms, typically worn to work in a variety of professions, such as healthcare, medicine, security, traffic control, transport, law enforcement, and defence force fields, to name only a few occupations that are distinguished at a glance by their garments.

Uniforms are intended to identify those engaged in most types of official capacities when it’s important for the uniform wearer to be instantly recognisable in their respective role whilst on duty.

School uniforms aren’t seen as corporate clothing, despite these garments giving scholars a uniform appearance. Although scholars so attired are representatives of their schools, schools are not regarded as entities that are run on a corporate or business organisational basis.

The Evolution of Corporate Attire

One might go back to a very long time ago in an attempt to establish when uniforms were first worn, perhaps even as far back as the ancient Roman Empire, when Roman legionnaires were similarly attired. Today, it is thought that the forerunner of early modern corporate clothing has evolved from the liveries that were issued to servants in European courts, approximately between 1500 and 1800, but particularly during the 17th century.

As has often been the case, well-heeled landowners and wealthy people who owned great estates sought to emulate the fashions and practices of their era’s royalty and noble classes. Subsequently, servants in grand homes were likewise required to don formal liveries that featured a coat of arms or badge of office that was unique to each affluent employer’s household. Insignia might also indicate the status, rank, and role of the wearer, as well as the superior status and image that the erstwhile employer wished to convey.

Similarities and Differences

Amongst other marketing initiatives, modern corporate organisations emphasise their relevance, brand, culture, and image via their distinctive clothing designs, colours, and individual logos, but there are differences between then and now.

Nowadays, however, most uniform business attire is deliberately intended to dispense with differences in employees’ rank and status by visually placing all employees on an equal footing and rank as far as their attire and appearance is concerned.

Internally, the practice of having employees wear the same corporate clothing enhances cohesion, inter-staff unity, bonding, team spirit, self-confidence, and performance. Externally, the brand and overall organisation becomes more familiar, trusted, and top of customers’ minds.
