This is a subject that’s very close to us at XCO Group, which was born from a single, independent retail outlet that sold sports clothing and equipment to customers in and around Pretoria, where our store was established in 1987. Gradually, over the years since then, the sporting goods shop grew and expanded. Changes were called for.

The group refocused its former retail activities and transformed its sphere of business into a comprehensive wholesale operation, manufacturing and supplying sports and other attire, destined for the use, confidence and comfort of the broader South African, sports-loving and highly competitive corporate sector.

 

Comfort and the Human Skin

 

The supremely sensitive human skin is the body’s often-ignored but largest vital organ, which should be valued and cared for at least as much as the heart, lungs, kidneys, bladder, brain, spine, muscles and tendons, and pancreas.

 

The list goes on, but we’re focusing on the skin and its multitude of nerve endings, which help to keep the body safe and relatively intact from harmful outside threats and injury, as well as fatal, extreme dehydration. Without skin, the human body cannot survive; thus it’s important to maintain this effective, efficient and vital barrier.

 

When the skin detects discomfort, it sends a message to the brain via its nerve endings. The brain is to decide what to do about dealing with irritants to the skin. Nonetheless, an athlete that’s immersed in his or her competitive sports match will usually ignore discomfort and continue competing despite irritations that may become injuries, often friction-related, induced by ill-fitting clothing that is inappropriate for maximum performance.

 

Upon encountering repetitive friction, the skin becomes red and irritated. If the movements that create friction continue, the skin forms a blister, which fills with a clear liquid that forms a protective cushion above the worst-affected area. Continued friction bursts the blister. Now, the sore spot becomes exposed to bacteria and is a raw and painful wound, which may be prone to infection. All this is caused by attire that fails to enhance performance – in comfort.

 

Very few sports people – be they amateur or professional - participate in sports that they don’t enjoy, since enjoyment, fun and a challenge are often the reasons why they commenced the activity in the first place.
