As soon as people become accustomed to an innovation, such as branded jackets, they tend to forget that there was a time when such items didn’t exist. Additionally, the fact that this improvement had an inventor or was discovered by a curious, problem-solving innovator’s mind is largely ignored.

The same applies to the branded jacket and the value of branding. In the distant days before the invention of jackets and branded body-covering garments, mankind sought to devise an entirely new method of keeping the upper body, shoulders, and arms warm, whilst being free to attend to other tasks, without any significant restriction of movement.

Early human beings undoubtedly wrapped themselves in furs, tanned animal skins, and woven linens or wool. Covering up, one way or another, was essential to keep the cold away, but way back then, body wrappings unfortunately didn’t allow for the convenience and dexterity of “hands free” or “look Ma, no hands”.

A novel invention was on the way, later to become a reality and an essential outerwear garment – initially known as a coat. Subsequently, a shorter, easy-to-wear, lighter-weight, less cumbersome version of the coat was developed. It was called a jacket, the word being derived from the French “jacquette” or “jaquet”, which originally referred to a “lightweight tunic”.

The Waterproof Mac

There are various opinions about the name of the inventor of jackets, as well as exactly when this item was invented. One source states that the product was invented by Charles Mackintosh in the 18th century. He developed a waterproof fabric with which he manufactured rain capes, jackets, and coats, which were branded by the public and users as Mackintosh or Macs.

Military Influence

Another source indicates that the coat and subsequent jacket has military origins, notably amongst Dutch sailors in the 1800s, who favoured heavy woollen outer garments that protected seamen from the worst effects of chilly conditions at sea.

The shorter versions, jackets, are said to have been popularised by British sailors, who took to the new, shorter designs that were created specifically for men engaged in taxing onboard naval duties.

Today, the list containing the numerous types of branded jackets is extensive and decidedly diverse.

- Straightjackets – a very unique application of a highly modified, restrictive, restraining garmen
- Bomber – so named because this outerwear that fitted snugly at the waist and cuffs was particularly popular with aircrews aboard bomber aircraft during World War ll.
